Capital Is Dead: Is This Something Worse? | Verso Books

A provocative and compelling exploration of our digital world as it crashes towards ecological disaster. Counter-intuitive, insightful, and imaginative, Capital is Dead is a timely reminder that there are things worse than capitalism - and we may just be living through them. Yet, if this is not capitalism anymore, could it be something worse? What if the world we’re living in is more dystopian than the techno utopias of the Silicon Valley imagination? And, if this is the case, how do we find a way out? Capital Is Dead offers not only the theoretical tools to analyse this new world of information, but the ones to change it, too.One book from which I drew much courage that I was not wrong to believe that something more fundamental was in play, and that capitalism itself was in question, is McKenzie Wark's 2019 exquisite Capital is Dead: Is This Something Worse? I cannot recommend it too strongly.A provocative and compelling exploration of our digital world as it crashes towards ecological disaster. Counter-intuitive, insightful, and imaginative, Capital is Dead is a timely reminder that there are things worse than capitalism - and we may just be living through them.

The Poor Are Richer Than We Think: Unlocking Dead Capital | The Daily Economy

Depictions of global wealth don't account for assets that lack formal ownership rights: the world's poor own a mountain of capital they can't ... Nothing is different from the first time I engaged with it in French, my native language, a decade ago. It’s always meant as a criticism of markets, capitalism, neoliberalism or whatever label is in vogue at the time. When individuals cannot have their ownership recognized, their wealth officially does not exist — even though it very much does. In 2000, economist Hernando De Soto studied what he called “dead capital.” The term refers to resources privately owned by individuals but without any formal title of ownership. For example, a Peruvian citizen might own a small business, but legally that property does not exist. Without legal recognition, it is extremely difficult to make that capital grow. On one hand, this hampers economic growth. On the other hand, it means we vastly underestimate the wealth (read: capital stock) of the world’s poorest populations. In 2000, when De Soto produced the first estimate of the scale of this “dead” (i.e., inactive) capital, the total amounted to about $9.3 trillion (9,300,000,000,000 dollars). At the time, this amounted to approximately 28 percent of global individual income.

Dead capital - Wikipedia

In the South Carolina Lowcountry, the United States Forest Service visited the concept of dead capital while attempting to manage heir property – land owned by two or more people that usually have a common ancestor who died without leaving a will – in the region. Dead capital is an economic term related to property which is informally held, is not legally recognized, and cannot be exchanged for financial capital. The uncertainty of ownership decreases the value of the asset and/or the ability to lend or borrow against it.The term dead capital was coined by Peruvian Economist Hernando de Soto Polar. De Soto estimated in 2015 that 5.3 billion of 7.3 billion people globally – over seventy percent of the world's population – hold dead capital that is worth US$ 9.3 trillion in assets. The economic impacts of dead capital are immense; only well-connected people have the ability to use their capital and join it together with other assets and create surplus value for further investment. Only these people can get life, educational, medical or property and casualty insurance and thus shield themselves from any problems.De Soto argued that those living in poverty should be provided titles to the land, homes and businesses they live, recognized as dead capital without being legally registered, which would bring vitality to the assets and grant poor individuals the opportunity to build wealth and generate income.

Das Kapital - Wikipedia

Capital: A Critique of Political Economy (German: Das Kapital. Kritik der politischen Ökonomie), also known as Das Kapital (German pronunciation: [das kapiˈtaːl]), is a foundational theoretical text in Marxist philosophy, economics, and politics by Karl Marx. The central argument of Das Kapital is that the motivating force of capitalism is in the exploitation of labour, whose unpaid work is the ultimate source of surplus value and profit. Beginning with an analysis of the commodity, Marx argues that the capitalist mode of production is a historically specific system where social relations are mediated by commodity exchange. This process drives capital accumulation, which in turn fosters technological change, the creation of a reserve army of labour, and a long-term tendency of the rate of profit to fall, leading to economic crises and intensifying class conflict.A key theme is commodity fetishism, the process by which the social relations of production are obscured and appear as objective, natural relations between things. Volume I focuses on the production process, Volume II on the circulation of capital, and Volume III on the process as a whole, examining the distribution of surplus value into profit, interest, and rent.It remains central to Marxian economics and has been highly influential in Western Marxism, critical theory, and cultural studies. The work has been subject to extensive debate and criticism since its publication, particularly concerning its labour theory of value, its predictions about the future of capitalism, and its association with 20th-century communist states.

Das Kapital, one of the major works of the 19th-century economist and philosopher Karl Marx (1818–83), in which he expounded his theory of the capitalist system, its dynamism, and its tendencies toward self-destruction.Much of Das Kapital spells out Marx’s concept of the “surplus value” of labour and its consequences for capitalism. According to Marx, it was not the pressure of population that drove wages to the subsistence level but rather the existence of a large army of unemployed, which he blamed on the capitalists.Because all profit results from an “exploitation of labour,” the rate of profit—the amount per unit of total capital outlay—depends largely on the number of workers employed. Because machines cannot be “exploited,” they cannot contribute to total profits, though they help labour produce more useful products.Only payroll capital—“variable capital”—is productive of surplus value and consequently of profit. The introduction of machines is profitable for the individual entrepreneur, to whom they give an advantage over his competitors. However, as outlay for machinery grows in relation to outlay for wages, profit declines in relation to total capital outlay.
